Sarah Palin Mob in NYC Tonight

We just got notice of a Sarah Palin gathering happening tonight in Union Square in NYC:

Presenting the 1st ever “SARAH PALIN EXPERIMENT and PAGEANT.” Let’s see how
many Sarah Palin’s will fit in UNION SQUARE!

Knowing that 75% of us ladies (and perhaps a few fellas) will be appearing as potential VP candidate Sarah Palin for Halloween, we’ll all unite in honor and celebration of a true MAVERICK – mother, governor and part-time huntress by MEETING AT…

UNION SQUARE (14th Street and University – north side of street)
October 31, 2008. 10pm

Part picnic. Part meet-n-greet. Instruments encouraged. And bring the rest of the Palin-gang if you can! Bristol! Todd! Trig! See and be seen. Stop by after the parade!!

*If you know ANYONE going as Sarah Palin – PASS THIS ALONG TO THEM!!*

NYC Big Wheel Race & Cruel DC

There are a couple of cool events happening Saturday.

The first was sent to us by our friends at Newmindspace.

Zombie Unicorn presents (with a little help from Newmindspace): NYC GREAT BIG WHEEL RACE 2008!

Bring your big wheel, trike, skateboard, velocipede, or handmade contraption on wheels along with your superhero costume to race down the Great Hill in Central Park against the greatest big wheelers in town.

You’ll need a helmet and other protective gear. Your vehicle’s seat must, at its lowest point, be lower than 12 inches. That’s low. Wheel size is open. Rubber wheels are strongly discouraged.

Free registration for racing: e-mail flopaint (at) gmail.com. Spectators more than welcome. Standard big wheels are available at indy toy stores & big box retail stores and odder wheeled units are probably available on trash day on your corner.

Meet up at Central Park Drive at 103rd St. on the East side. We’ll take a walk through and then the main event.

Prizes for most original vehicle, costume and 4th place finisher.

Instant Grant Program

Artist Steve Lambert sent us a new collaboration of his, The Federation of Students and Nominally or Unemployed Artists. The group spent an afternoon in Union Square Park in Manhattan giving away “instant grants” to anyone who pitched them a project.

How it works:

The FSNUA aims to re-inspire creative thinking and action in everyday people by removing a small barrier and providing encouragement. We give small, unsecured grants in the form of $10-$60 for creative projects thought up on the spot by everyday people. In the past this has included a merchant marine, two 10 year old girls, a US soldier on leave from Iraq, an accordion player from Alaska, and around 40 others. We funded their new paintings, drawings, knitting, and photojournalism projects, and the repair of one accordion. Projects that may not have happened had they not come across 10 people in the park to support and inspire the thought.

Beyond the small amount of money, the project encourages people to see themselves as something other than workers or consumers even if it just for the length of time required to apply for the FSNUA grant. We also hope to re-inspire dormant desires to create while presenting an example of generosity without an ulterior motive.

Park(ing) Day

Today is Park(ing) Day 2008. Groups around the world will turn parking spaces into temporary public parks.

San Francisco art collective REBAR first created “PARK(ing)” in 2005 to re-imagine the potential of the metered parking space. In 2006, in collaboration with TPL, REBAR founded “PARK(ing) Day”: a global exploration of the creative potential of streets.

Here’s a video from Park(ing) Day NYC 2006:

Revolutionary Water Gun Battle

Remember the water gun battle in Boston we told you about a couple of weeks ago? It happened this Saturday and Nick Carlisle wrote in with a report:

On Saturday, we (Banditos Misteriosos) hosted a Revolutionary War re-enactment…with water guns and bubbles. We had probably about 300 people, separated into two teams: the “Redcoats” and the “Colonists.”

We marched from two different locations and met up to douse each other in water on the Charles River Esplanade. People of all ages took part.

I put a quick video together (as I’m sure you can surmise, filming in the midst of hundreds of people with water guns can be risky, but I couldn’t resist).

The bubbles were meant to be a “peacetime cease-fire” (of course it didn’t work, the “troops” re-engaged and resumed battle within a couple of minutes — word has it that many people dipped their water guns into the Charles River to re-load during this time.)

Anonymous Semi-Nudist Colony

Marc Horowitz, social crusader and one-man think tank, is making a new series of videos for Crackle where he drives across America in a route that traces his own signature. The video above is episode four in the series.

Marc Horowitz encourages the buttoned-down residents of Nampa, Idaho to semi-express themselves by donning ski masks and taking off a few items of clothing. The result is the city’s first “anonymous semi-nudist colony.”

Marc has done a whole mess of great projects over the years. Check them out.

Upcoming: Mp3 Experiment Geneva

There will be an Mp3 Experiment happening in Geneva, Switzerland next Thursday. The event is being organized by a local group. See the Geneva Mp3 Games site for more details (helpful if you speak French!)

The Mp3 Experiment was created by Improv Everywhere in 2004. There have been four installments so far in New York, with a fifth planned for later this year.

John Wayne Memorial Balloon Fight

Last week we posted a notice about a water balloon fight in San Francisco. Geek Entertainment TV has a video shot on location, above. Looks like it was lots of fun, despite a relatively small turnout.

Permanent Nutface Gary

The always hilarious Rob Lathan has made a Father’s Day video with his new character “Permanent Nutface Gary.” (You may remember Rob as the “Rob!” who couldn’t find his seat at Yankee Stadium.)

The video is partially scripted, but there are some great moments of the character interacting with real people on the streets of New York.

Happy Father’s Day!

Meet a Black Guy

A duo in Oregon recently staged a new version of Improv Everywhere’s 2006 mission Meet a Black Person. They set up their “Meet a Black Guy” booth at the farmer’s market in their hometown Corvallis, which is overwhelmingly white.

There’s a write up about it in their local paper, and the duo was interviewed on NPR (where they kindly give a shout out to the original Improv Everywhere mission.)

In other news the original Black Person just got hired back for his third season as a writer on MAD TV, and the editor of the original video (below) just got hired back for his second season! Congrats to Colton Dunn and Chris Kula!
